How Much Fat You Think Is Thin?

The interview excerpts were all over the Internet and in almost every newspaper. But how many of us are going to take it seriously. We live in the digital era, where the beautiful pictures you see on magazines and billboards are touched and retouched to appear slim, smooth and perfect. And we all strive for that perfect body. But in reality is anyone perfect?

How do you decide whether you are thin or fat? When it comes to your health, one of the important factors judging your health status is your BMI – Body Mass Index.

BMI is a measure for human body shape based on a person’s weight and height.

BMI = Weight in kilograms / (Height in metres)2

Considering the increasing incidence of obesity, the BMI values differ from country to country. However, as per the World Health Organization (WHO), a BMI less than 18.5 is considered as underweight and may indicate malnutrition or other health problems, while a BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight and above 30 is considered obese. BMI is a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people (children and adults) and is used in screening the weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Obesity is a risk factor to several ailments like heart diseases, joint problems, diabetes, several endocrinological disorders, and even cancer. Therefore, it is essential to maintain a healthy lifestyle. By doing so your BMI value remains in the healthy zone, and at the same time you have high energy level—which means your confidence is high, and no matter what you wear, for sure you will look radiant!

It is important to maintain a healthy weight, which is only achievable by eating healthy and following a routine exercise regime. Crash dieting will help you lose weight but the results are temporary and every crash diet has its own negative effects on the body. Also, if you are gaining weight, it is advisable to check with your healthcare professional to rule out any hormonal disorder.

Name calling was always and still is considered rude. Calling someone fat is impolite, and be it on TV or otherwise, it is never appropriate to label an individual without even knowing him or her well enough. Fat is not ugly; it is unhealthy. Well, in that case, ‘BMI below 25’ would make an interesting New Year Resolution…what say?
